I propose artificial photosynthesis as this 'ultimate source of energy' ...as opposed to coal, nuclear, shale oil or oil sands, photovoltaics, wind, thermal, wave, or whatever else.
Read a description of this technology.
Artificial photosynthesis ('real' photosynthesis occurs within a 'plant') is provided by a molecule that absorbs the photons from sunlight and emits multiple electrons that can be corralled to convert CO2 in the atmosphere into hydrogen and oxygen.
Artificial photosynthesis may appear to be another form of photovoltaics...but the current material used in photovoltaic processes ...silicon...to produce electrons does not convert CO2 but rather converts photons directly to electrons...a great idea but less elegant than one that does two important things: one, converts the CO2 in earth's atmosphere (a cause of global warming) to oxygen which in combination with the hydrogen in the atmosphere produces electrons and water...thus creating basic energy at the same time as reducing levels of CO2...otherwise known as a 'twofer...in and of itself a desirable cool outcome.
